Data security focuses on how to protect your data, operations, and bottom line. In the case where a company’s best efforts at preventing a data breech or data disaster have been defeated, what is the next step? We can learn from Dilbert that without a written (and tested!) response plan, valuable response time can be lost and the scope of the event can be greatly increased due to employee uncertainty or fear.

Do your cashiers know to report ANYTHING suspicious relating to the point-of-sale machines or gas pumps, even something as basic as a different looking cable? Is someone actually testing those tape backups regularly? A written plan lessens the blow when a data disaster or breach does occur, so take a few days from the month of June to revaluate your written plans.
